Cape Flats Nature
The Cape Flats known is Africa as Die Kaapse Vlakte is a spacious flat low-land area located in the southeast in the main business neighborhood in Cape Town. Most people refer to Cape Town as “The Flats.”
Some people refer to it as an “apartheid dumping ground”. During the 1950’s the area was settled by people the government classed as “non-white.” Due to Race-based legislation, e.g. Group Areas Act), the government made rules that drove non-white people out of the main urban locations deemed for only white people. The non-whites were placed in townships in the flats constructed by the government. Some places it was against the law for Blacks to live in white only areas and they were forced to live in less formal settlements in other areas of the Flats.
The Cape Flats History is a reflection as during recent years the Flats have become the largest populated area in Greater Cape Town.
